Chelsea beat Manchester United 2–0 as Brighton win 1–0 at Manchester City

Both Manchester clubs lost in the Premier League on Saturday, October 31, 2026 (Tikimt 21, 2019 in the Ethiopian calendar). In Week 9, Chelsea beat 10-man Manchester United 2–0 at Stamford Bridge, and Brighton won 1–0 away at league leaders Manchester City.
It was City's second straight league defeat, a week after a 2–1 loss at Aston Villa. For United, Sky Sports reported, the result adds pressure on head coach Michael Carrick.
Chelsea 2–0 Manchester United
United had their chances before the break, and Matheus Cunha had a first-half goal ruled out by VAR, NBC Sports reported. The game turned after half-time.
Morgan Rogers, Chelsea's record £117m signing, opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a solo run into the box, according to the BBC. It was his sixth goal of the season.
In the 63rd minute, Lisandro Martínez caught Wesley Fofana in the face with a raised arm at a corner. After a VAR review, the Argentine defender was shown a second yellow card and Chelsea were awarded a penalty. Cole Palmer converted it a minute later for his 50th Premier League goal, NBC Sports reported.
Manchester City 0–1 Brighton
Brighton recorded their first Premier League away win over City, Sky Sports reported. Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute after a miscued clearance by City right-back Matheus Nunes, according to AFP. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen then held off sustained City pressure to protect the lead.
The result came three days after Fabian Hürzeler's side lost to City on penalties in the League Cup at the same ground. City had opened the league season with seven straight wins, ESPN reported, but have now lost two in a row.
“It’s a very similar feeling that we had after the Aston Villa game,” City manager Enzo Maresca said afterwards, AFP reported.
Brighton are now two points off the top, and Arsenal can go top if they avoid defeat at Liverpool on Sunday, Sky Sports reported.
Around the league
Elsewhere in Week 9, ESPN reported these results:
- Bournemouth 2–0 Leeds United
- Brentford 2–0 Nottingham Forest
- Coventry City 3–1 Sunderland
- Hull City 2–2 Ipswich Town
Coventry climbed out of the relegation zone and left Sunderland bottom of the table, ESPN reported. Brentford beat Nottingham Forest with a Nikola Milenković own goal and a late strike from Igor Thiago. Evanilson and Amine Adli scored for Bournemouth against Leeds.
What comes next
A red card for two bookings normally carries a one-match ban, so United are likely to be without Martínez for their next league game. City travel to Nottingham Forest on November 7, and Brighton host Brentford a day later.
Much of the season remains. Each of the 20 Premier League clubs plays 38 matches, home and away against every other team, so Week 9 is still early in the campaign.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all have large followings in Ethiopia.
