Privacy Policy

What we hold depends on how you use the site.

• If you only read: a record of the pages you view, with a random session identifier, the page that referred you, your browser type, how far you scrolled and how long you stayed. This is not tied to your name unless you are signed in.
• If you create an account: your email address, the display name you choose, and a password that we store only in hashed form. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email address and name from them and never see your password.
• If you subscribe: your plan and its status. Payments are handled by Stripe; your card details go to Stripe and are not stored by us.
• If you are signed in: your bookmarks and reading history, so we can show them back to you and count articles against the free monthly limit.
• If you sign up for a newsletter: your email address, your name if you give it, which newsletters you chose, and whether emails were opened and which links were clicked.
• If you turn on notifications: the address your browser gives us for sending them, and the topics you picked.
• If you comment: your comment, shown publicly under your display name, and your votes on other comments.
• If you send a tip: what you write, plus your name and email if you choose to give them. You can submit a tip anonymously.

We also use your IP address briefly to limit abuse, such as too many searches or sign-in attempts in a short time.

• To provide the site: signing you in, enforcing the paywall, showing your bookmarks and history.
• To send what you asked for: newsletters, notifications and messages about your account or subscription.
• To understand what is read, so we can decide what to cover and fix what does not work.
• To keep the site secure and to moderate comments.

We do not sell your personal information.

We keep a small amount of information in your browser instead of using advertising cookies:

• Your sign-in token and basic profile, so you stay signed in for up to 30 days.
• A count of the free articles you have read this month.
• A session identifier that lasts until you close the tab.
• A cookie remembering the language you chose.
• A service worker that keeps pages you have visited available offline and, if you turn notifications on, delivers them.

Clearing your browser’s site data removes all of these and signs you out.

We share information only with companies that help us run the service, and only what each one needs:

• Stripe, to take payments and manage subscriptions.
• Our email delivery provider, to send newsletters and account emails.
• Google or Apple, if you choose to sign in with them.
• Our hosting provider, which stores the site’s data on our behalf.

Our AI newsroom tools work on article text and published news reports. We do not send readers’ personal information to AI providers.

We may disclose information where the law requires it.

Headlines on our Around the Web page, and source links in our articles, open on other publishers’ sites. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which we do not control.

• Change your password or sign out of all other devices from your account.
• Change which newsletters you get, or unsubscribe, using the links at the bottom of any newsletter email.
• Turn notifications off in your browser’s settings for this site.
• Ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing editorial@addisgazette.com from the address on your account.
