Much of our day is spent on verification. Editors choose which stories from the wire deserve coverage, check AI-assisted drafts against their sources line by line, fill in what the draft could not establish, and decide what is ready to publish. Reporters and contributors bring the original reporting no wire feed can supply.

The skills that matter most here are these:

• Careful fact-checking and a habit of asking where a claim comes from.
• Clear writing in at least one of English, Amharic, Afaan Oromoo, Tigrinya or Somali.
• Knowledge of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa: its politics, economies and communities.
• Comfort working with new tools, and the judgment to overrule them.
