Gunfire on Ethiopia-Kenya border drives residents into Kenya and strands cargo trucks
Sporadic gunfire on the Ethiopian side of the border with Kenya has sent residents fleeing into Kenya, while cargo trucks remain stranded at the crossing, according to a report published by Japan Today, myMotherLode.com and the Livingston Enterprise.
The disruption matters beyond the border districts. The crossing is a commercial route linking landlocked Ethiopia with Kenyan roads and markets. A halt in truck traffic affects traders, transporters and the supply of goods on both sides. The arrival of civilians in Kenya may also put pressure on host communities and on Kenyan authorities.
What is known
The report establishes three points. Gunfire on the Ethiopian side has been intermittent rather than continuous. Ethiopians are crossing into Kenya to escape it. Trucks are stuck at the border. The three outlets ran the same headline and appear to have carried a single shared account. None of them gives a different version of events.
The report does not say who is firing. It is not clear whether the shooting involves Ethiopian security forces, armed groups, local militias or a combination of these.
The scale of the displacement has not been confirmed, and it is not known whether anyone has been killed or wounded.
The number of stranded trucks and how long they have been held up have not been reported. It is also unclear whether the vehicles are being held by officials, are waiting for the shooting to stop or are blocked for another reason.
Official response
No statement from the Ethiopian or Kenyan governments has been reported.
Background
Ethiopia and Kenya share a border of roughly 860 kilometres. The main formal crossing is at Moyale, a town divided between the two countries that sits on the highway connecting Addis Ababa and Nairobi. Ethiopia has been landlocked since Eritrea became independent in 1993. Most of its trade passes through Djibouti, but the road south through Kenya is an important secondary link for regional commerce.
The border area has seen violence and displacement before. In March 2018, thousands of residents of the Ethiopian side of Moyale fled into Kenya after Ethiopian soldiers shot dead several civilians. The government later said the operation had been based on mistaken intelligence. Southern Ethiopia has also been affected by conflict in Oromia region, where government forces have fought the armed Oromo Liberation Army for several years. It has not been established whether the current shooting is connected to either of these.
What comes next
The main unanswered questions are who is behind the gunfire, how many people have crossed into Kenya and when truck traffic will resume. Kenyan authorities have not said how they will handle the arrivals. Transporters and traders are waiting for word on when the crossing will be safe to use again.
