Nine Dead After Private Jet Crashes in South Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — All nine people aboard a private business jet were killed on Sunday afternoon when the aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, carving a crater into a roadway and erupting in a massive fireball, the Associated Press reported.

Federal officials identified the aircraft as a Learjet 60, registration N722BD, which had departed from Austin, Texas, and was en route to the Bahamas. At approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, the twin-engine jet crashed on Military Trail, a six-lane commercial roadway with businesses and restaurants in the Palm Springs–Greenacres area. While early reports located the site roughly seven miles southwest of West Palm Beach, the BBC reported the crash occurred near Cresthaven, approximately nine miles from President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. Trump had departed Mar-a-Lago on Air Force One about an hour before the crash, according to the BBC.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue declared a mass casualty incident, the BBC reported, though authorities confirmed no one on the ground was killed or injured. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the crash a "horrific tragedy," the BBC reported, adding that the Federal Aviation Administration was dispatching personnel to aid the National Transportation Safety Board with the investigation.

Cockpit Audio and Rapid Descent

Air traffic control audio captured the aircraft's rapid descent amid regional severe weather. Heavy rain and thunderstorms were reported in the area around the time of the crash. Flight analysis indicated the jet fell hundreds of feet per second before impact, according to the BBC.

• Icing and turbulence: As reported by the BBC, audio from the cockpit recorded a crew member reporting moderate turbulence and stating they were managing ice while requesting to climb as the jet encountered precipitation.
• Rapid dive: The pilot subsequently reported descending at 10,000 feet per minute, declared an emergency over an overspeed descent reaching 20,000 feet per minute, and warned that the plane was going to crash.
• Final transmission: Roughly 35 seconds after the first mayday transmission, the final words from the cockpit were that the crew was out of time, the BBC reported.

Dashcam footage showed the jet diving nearly vertically into the ground. "It's like a missile coming down, and a massive explosion, debris going everywhere," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told reporters, the BBC reported.

Infrastructure Damage and Evacuations

The crash inflicted severe damage on municipal utilities, including severed water lines. DeSantis and local officials stated it would take at least 30 days before Military Trail could reopen, according to the BBC.

Roughly 600 residents were evacuated from a nearby mobile home park to temporary shelters supported by the American Red Cross due to infrastructure destruction and debris. The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are continuing their inquiry into the mechanical and atmospheric factors behind the crash, while the identities of those killed have not yet been released.
